SharePoint 2010 Migration from MOSS 2007

The Client

The client had an enterprise portal built on MOSS 2007. There were fifteen sub sites for different departments and branches in the portal. The portal site was designed for the whole company with a single content database; the size of content database was larger than 27 GB and growing very fast. There are some third-party SharePoint Solution components and Web Parts installed in  the SharePoint farm.

There were 3 SharePoint servers and a database server in the farm, including two web application servers for load balancing and a search server. The database server installed SQL Server 2005 with SP3.

What the Client Wanted

The client wanted to upgrade the system to SharePoint 2010.  They wanted to take advantage of the new features of SharePoint 2010.  All the existing data and functionalities need to be persisted in the new environment.

The Solution

As the system was very large and very complex, we set up a VMware machine to test the upgrade firstly. This helped us to be ready for any possible issues and found suitable solutions.

In the testing environment, we upgraded all the sites firstly. Then we made the user profile service and search service working. We tracked all the issues we met and made plans to solve them, especially with third party solutions and customized Web Parts.
